A super day in the field hunting Turkeys!
Not only bagging a super nice Tom Turkey, but dropping the birds most feared predator before he could get one of the birds that morning, Pete's quick reactions with his 12 ga pump ended the day in the most perfect way!
Congratulations Pete...!!!

This is becoming more common in Maine's woods, due to the over population of coyotes in Maine and the lack of being able to effectively harvest this predator!

Pete Sterling - Waterboro, Maine
I called in two Toms, and just as they were 40 yards away, I heard a snap in the woods and a Coyote came out running after the birds.  I shot him and then shot one of the Toms!

Chris Corbett (on right) has been hunting with Bryan for years and he always gets what he is after. But in the last few years he has had trouble hunting. He is just now starting to recover from a successful battle against cancer. However
through...  his love for the outdoors has not wavered. He wasn't three weeks out of the hospital, last fall, when he was chasing ducks and deer. Bryan had to change a lot about how he hunts, due to some limitations from his recovery. But... he still gets up and out to chase game.
We got the the field at 3:30 and got the blind set up, decoys out, and had
plenty of time to talk shop. By 5:30 the birds were gobbling, but they seemed
to be going around us. Sure enough they were coming in from behind (this
always seems to happen). I got aggressive with the call and 6 long beards
lit up and started our way. I told Bryan "first strutter you see, cut his
head off." 30 seconds later, bang...flop and the king was on the ground.
He had taken a bird we have been after for 2 years. 22lb 9.5 inch beard
(but a brush, I need to get better photo), and 1.25 inch spurs. It was a
great ending to a story with way too many chapters.

Wyatt Esheman (age10)
This morning Dylan and I were lucky enough to be with Wyatt for his first turkeys hunt. It was fast and Furious this morning. We
arrived to find the blind I had set up last night had blown across the
field not 80 yards from where the turkeys were roosted.
I eased over there and retrieved my blind and got it set back up in the
field. By 5:30 the birds were all fired up and coming hard. I was using my
Extreme Dimensions call and the yelp was plucking the fruit off the turkey
tree. The birds came to about 20 yards and then started to filter off tot
he right. I moved Wyatt's shooting sticks and he took careful aim.He asked
if my gun had any kick. "oh no, none I said." I am a teacher I lie to kids
every day.  BLAM!!!! and his first tom turkey was on the ground. Dylan and
Wyatt  took off running to see the bird. Dad and I were not far in tow. A
great morning, one we will not soon forget.

Bird was 18lb 8 inch beard .5 inch beard

Chris Cobbett (co-host of Northwoods Adventures TV) , with Father and son

17lb and taken on friday and Dad's was 19lb and taken the very next day.
There two now have one more passion to share.  Both hunts were filmed for
Northwoods Adventures TV and will air next spring.

We set up on 4 toms we had roosted last night. They were all fired up and
things were looking good till a real owl landed in front of us and started
hooting. Since turkeys and owls don't get along so hot. The birdies flew
down and went the other way. I had to be to school by 7:00. So I hit one quick spot on the way home at
6:35. A Tom lit up and I had just a few minutes to drag him into a log
landing. The bird wanted to play and at 6:45 the Tom was down. I snapped
this photo and headed for school. My clothes were under my camo, so a
superman change and off I went. The turkey has about 1 inch spurs, 10 inch
rope, and might go 19lb.
Don Sayward - Wells, Maine
Took this 20lb Tom with my bow this morning (5/8/07) in Wells. The bird had
a 9 inch beard and no sign that it ever had spurs, not even a nub. After the
arrow, tipped with a muzzy broadhead, passed through the bird, 3 other Toms
came running over to kick him while he was down. I had to chase them off and
they wanted a crack at me. Wish I had caught it on video.

This was one hunt for the books for sure. I set up on this bird at O-dark-30 and at 4:20 he was gobbling his head off. I made one soft tree call and the next thing I knew him and his hen fly down and come straight for the decoy with her in the lead cackling to beat the band. Problem was it was so dark I wasn't sure if it was legal light so I opted not to shoot. I wanted good light to video this awesome show. Well it got light and the birds had kinda made their way down this small field about 90 yds away so I pulled the Phantom Mini and gave it a whirl . The Tom went nuts but never moved strutting around but what happened next is something I have never witnessed in the turkey woods . The hen starts yelping and cackling so I gave it right back to her with my mouth call and the Phantom mini that's when she went into strut that's right strut ! I am not talking about puffing up walking in to the decoys I mean full strut pushing her wings forward and everything.
With all the hen calling the old Tom just couldn't take it and strolled in for a 30 yd shot . The camera was rolling and boy was it going to be some show people just wouldn't believe. After I shot I went to my bird and was shocked at how much Gold color was in his feathers . Is that awesome or what !
Back to the truck I was calling everybody to share in my success .
I rewound the tape to see what I had and I hear a click noise ( not good) ya the camera ate the tape wonderful ! I may have not got this hunt to tape but it will live with me forever and boy was it worth it!

My hunting buddy, Jay Wagner, assisted me with the thrill of this hunt! What a beautiful set up, at one time we had him in at 75 yards, but our one hen decoy seemed to be making him very cautious, so he backed away.  I had pulled this ol' boy off a hen at over 400 yards in a second field.  He lost interest in her, for what seemed like an hour, but it was only 5 minutes! Then we could hear spitting and a drumming coming along our side of the field,  until he finally came into view through the branches of the pines I was using for cover, he was on top of me at 7 yards before I caught sight of him, he was in full display, bright red and blue head doing everything a turkey hunter sees in his dreams. Then POW!
The strange thing about this hunt, was that we were nestled into our little pine and juniper natural blind setting so tightly we couldn't see down this 500 yard field and view the birds. We had a small radius from my vantage point and across the 75 yard width of the field! We are quite sure the first Tom, that slid away at 75 yards.. is still living today! Because this Tom had a "Jake" friend right behind him and the full display of spitting and drumming that was going on was quite different, than the sneak play the first Tom was doing on the other side of the narrow field!  It simply reinforces turkey hunting is always an adventure and every hunt I have ever been on, has never been the same! Just when we thought it was going to be another one of those days, chasing a Tom that had either had lead thrown at him or decoy and call shy, a hot Tom showed up to make my day! All I can say is, "Thank you Turkey Gods"!

This mornings hunt had my wife Lisa Fenderson (Shapeleigh, Maine) up to bat. Our son Tyler wasn't going to miss this show if a big old long beard was to be taken by his Mom. I let these two sleep in for an extra 30 minutes before it was time to make the journey to the Turkey woods to see if there was any magic left in Santa's bag.
Well we get to the spot anticipating the sounds of a huge gobbler that has alluded me for 4 days only to hear the singing of little birds nothing else. I wasn't to happy but like I always say " it just isn't his time yet" little did I know we would meet soon enough. We checked 3 of my other spots nothing to be had so I decided to go back and see if old mister long beard had showed up yet. This bird is a woods bird so you never know if he is there or not and if you are lucky to get a chance at him you had better make it count! We showed up I hit the call and My son said he gobbled dad then my wife said she heard him. Game on and boy was I excited to test my skills against this woods wise gobbler. We get in the woods make one call and he gobbles awesome! I set the decoy 20 yds from my wife, Tyler set up with her, he wasn't going to miss this show. I set up the camera and called 4 more times, he responded everytime closer and closer. Then I could see him coming, my heart was pounding, one more call and he was fixed on the decoy . Strutting and gobbling he came right in majestic and beautiful. That's when I whispered to my wife SHOOT. With a pull of the trigger she had harvested her Maine Tom. Tyler and her ran down to the bird tackling it feathers went everywhere . It was a special moment for our family and I was proud.
Lisa's bird came in at 23 lbs 2 oz 10.75 inch beard 1 1/16 spur and 1 inch spur .
That's what I am talking about!

The roosting homework was done well by our friend Jay Wagner on this bird! Jay e-mailed me (Steve Beckwith) and told me he had roosted this bird with two hens and a jake, for our friend that came up late last night from Massachusetts for a two day hunt! Needless to say, Ralph is headed home early to be with his family. At 3:30 AM, Jay was drawing me a map of where these birds had taken up residence on a tree line. Jay had the pleasure of taking our friend, John Mondello, to a different spot on this day.  I had the pleasure of, Jay's expert scouting abilities and being with Ralph Pino for this hunt, which provided me the opportunity to walk this guy right into the lap of Ralph's waiting 10 Ga. The bird stayed in roost with several others gobbling in the area in all directions, until he could no longer stand looking at the lone decoy I had placed out on the field edge. I hit the call with a steady hen yelp and I knew he was closing in on the set up. Then all I could hear was spitting and drumming coming towards us, he was coming in silent except for this wonderful sound. In seconds it was all over. Ralph touched off the old 10 ga. when he was neck stretched and in full strut, peaking over the rise of the hill at the decoy he so intently wanted to hook up with!! Another story book hunt for the 2007 season of the MaineTurkey.com crew! The rain set in on us, but John and I continued on in search of another bird, luck was not on our side and the rain won today's battle for John's bird. With plenty of season left.. John is up to bat next!

Well 4:00 am came early for my friend Chris Caliase and I (Chris Cobbett).
We set up in the back of a field where we had seen a huge tom the night
before. However he was with some hens and did not say a word at first
light. We waited him till 5:30 and then hit the road. We checked 3 more
spots with no results. Then we went to the cornfield where I took my tom. Sure enough there was a big tom just getting ready to exit the upper corner. We jammed down a snowmobile trail  and got set up. A few light calls and the tom was headed right for us. I whispered over to chris "can you see him yet?" BOOOOOM!!!!  I said "I guess so!"
On the dirt he had a 19 lb tom, 9 inch beard, 7/8 spurs.

My brother shot his first turkey. It was a hunt to remember. We started off hunting in the morning at one spot and after no luck, we moved around to other locations and we had 4 jakes come in at about 60 to 70 yards once and then they went away. A little after 10:00 A.M. I told my brother lets go back where we started the morning, we had heard a few gobbling and could not get them in. We went back walking in the field, we came up a hill and I spotted a turkey about 80 to 100 yards away. I did not have my binoculars so I couldn't tell what it was. I give a little call. It did not gobble, but started walking towards us. It stopped once and I give another call and it came about 35 yards and I still could not tell what it was. I could not see any beard and the head did not have the red in it.  It was standing still and then it took a step and I was able to see the beard. I whispered to my brother to shoot. It soon ended! His first bird not a record one but a first bird.

Tom with a 9 inch beard, 13/16 inch spurs, and It weighed 18 pounds
Well we had a good time and a great hunt this morning. It all started last
night. I got a call from another turkey nut; Dan Grover. He had a friend
to take out in the morning and could not get out to roost. Since they were
going to let me tag along, I was eager to get out and try and find a tom
to play with. I spent 2 hours driving around and did not see one bird.
About 10 minutes before fly up time, I finally stumbled across a tom and 2
jakes fighting it out in a cornfield. I popped a squat and waited to see
where they would go. Two minutes later, I noticed something coming out of
the woods off to my right. It was a huge bobcat and he had turkey dinner
on the mind.  I jumped out and yelled at him. He never even took his eyes
off the prize. I did however manage to scare the birds onto the roost.
Whatever works, birds were in the tree. I called Dan to let him know what
I had seen. He had hunted this tom before and knew all his tricks.

3:00 am Dan, myself  and the hunter, Jarrett, met at Dans and got the all
out toys ready. Well before daylight we tip toed across the filed and set
up near a small island Dan knew of in the back corner of the cornfield.
We had plenty of time to goof around, swap lies (hunting stories), and cut
up. At about 5:00 a hen started calling from just off the field edge. I
did a few light tree yelps with a slate call. The hen got all in a huff
and triggered another hen off to our left. Within minutes it was like
someone shook the turkey tree, because the fruit was falling everywhere.
Several jakes and hens we now in the field and the tom was down and only
about 120 yards back. I had not sanded the slate call and could not get it
to yelp right, so I switched to a reed call. It did not take long and the
jakes and hens were at 20 yards in the decoys. The Tom was in tow about 50
yards out.

Here is where it gets a little crazy. Two more hens flew down behind us
and the tom was circling around to our right. He was going around the
island. Jarrett could not get a shot as they were to far right. Those
jakes in the decoys started looking pretty good. I could tell Jarrett was
giving it some thought. So we made a move. I got on the ground so Jarret
would have room to move around. I started calling very aggressive. The
idea was to make noise to cover me unzipping the back window. It worked
like a charm. The hens came right by us at 15 yards with big boy in tow.
Jarrett steadied a bead and let lead fly. Dan was right, he can shoot.
Bird was  doing the upside down bicycle dance.

Jarrett's Tom was 21ln, inch spurs, and had a 9 inch beard

Devin Morrill with Guide Chris Corbett
Saturday was a comedy of errors. We started out calling a Jake and a
bearded Hen. The shooter was a good friend Deven Morrill. He was not game
for shooting either (any boy did I try to talk him into the jake, wife had
breakfast on the table). So I kept calling and a few minutes later a tom
was at 30 yards. Problem was he was directly behind us and we were not set
up to get a shoot that way. He finally walked off not to return.

So off we went looking for a new contestant to play our game. I took Dev
down a new logging road where we had got on a bird last week. We called
and walked and then called some more. However instead of setting up, we
just kept walking. About 2 minutes later we rounded the corner and there
was a strutter at 25 yards. I didn't think he saw us, so we backed up and
started calling. The hope was to get it on tape. Well I was wrong, because
he never came in and was gone when we went back to look. Rookie mistake on
my part.

Off again. By now the camera is soaked and we are just on "get a bird"
mode. We went to the scene of the crime where I killed my tom. Nothing
there, but as we made it to the spot where the powerlines crossed, we saw
2 jakes in the woods. I drove down the dirt road and turned around. As I
just about got back to the powerline 4 toms crossed and ran over the top
of the hill and into the woods on the right. We gave about 2 minutes to
calm down and then Deven went up the pole line and basically set up on the
pole. I went to the other side and started calling. Three calls and the
toms gave up their position. Next thing I hear is a boom. I yelled to
Deven, "did you get him?" "hell ya" echoed down the line.

Tom went 19.5 lb 8.5. inch beard and 7/8 spurs.

Tom - 3/4" Spurs, 9 1/2" Beard- Weight 17 lbs.
A little History on Cheyenne, her father and I have been taking her out turkey hunting in Maine, since she was old enough to go hunting in Maine! At age 10, she scored her first bird. Cheyenne has just accomplished, what may be the first  young woman to have ever accomplished this feat in the State of Maine, which is to harvest a turkey every year she was allowed to hunt as a youth hunter in Maine! Five years of turkey hunting and five turkeys have now been harvested by Cheyenne. All five birds have been called to her sights, by MaineTurkey.com Webmaster-Steve Beckwith, along with the over the shoulder aid of her father, Jay Wagner, as her faithful shooting coach!

We hunted all day Wednesday, worked 4 different Toms at 4 different locations to no bird on the ground, Thursday, we worked two different birds, and they were both almost, but no cigars hunts! Two long but great days of gobbling and excitment with no end results!

Today's hunt was probably the hardest, most exciting hunt that any turkey hunter has ever witnessed! And to have Cheyenne be at the business end of her 20 Ga 3" Mag Turkey slaying machine, made this hunt super special for her father and I!

We watched this bird strutting with two hens in a field the evening before, Jay had to take a friend to, the Portland, Maine airport for a flight at 6 AM, which put him back at his residence at 7 A.M., when I received a phone call, asking me if I was ready to go give it a whirl!  Jay and Cheyenne was at my house at 7:30 AM and we only had a short drive from my house to where we were going to try and locate the bird we had seen last night. We did a drive by, to only see the two hens in the field, and no Tom!  I knew the woods very well, so we proceeded to walk the ridges behind the fields, crow calling and then getting more serious with some hen calls, as the morning was moving along.  We walked behind four huge fields and could not hear any response from a male bird, I knew there was a strip cut and then a hidden remote field back about a quarter mile from the main road, so I headed us towards that area. I let out a good aggressive hen series, and Cheyenne with her young crisp ears, said she heard one and pointed, towards the hidden field area, so I knew where we needed to go. We worked our way to the back corner of the strip lot, and let out a call. The bird heard was about 300 yards away, so we set up shop and started the fun! I say fun, but it really was one solid hour of turkey hunting frustration! I called this bird in, within 50 yards where he proceeded to strut in the woods and gobble  trying to get the hen to come to him, he became frustrated and worked his way back to over 100 yards into the woods again, so I proceeded to hit him with a series of serious yelping and cackling with my mouth call, because there was a small brook and swampy area he did not want to come across, and I figured I would let him know the hen wasn't crossing it either! He came back again to the 50 yard mark in the woods, but he again worked his way back to the higher ridge at 100 yards back. I waited about 10 minutes and hit him with a series of desperate hen yelps and than let up! He became curious and worked his way across the brook and into the range of Cheyenne's 20 Ga at 25 yards. Jay and Cheyenne had been sitting directly in the sun for an hour today it hit 90 degrees in the shade. So Jay being an old man, was laying down behind the tree, and could not move when the bird came in silent, as he heard the safety snap off, he whispered to Cheyenne, when she had a good shot, to take it. A half second later, BANG, end of story!
Cheyenne made a beautiful shot and to see her excitement, her fathers, and of course my own, can only be imagined! For the three of us, it is embedded in our hunting memories as one of the greatest and best hunts of our lifetime!

Congratulations Cheyenne on your five year accomplishment as a Maine Youth Hunter!
