Youth Day 2006

Today was youth day and we went to a spot Jay had been scouting very hard! We were in the woods and set up by 4 A.M. with legal shooting time 4:58, we were set up with time to spare. We heard no gobbling on the roost this morning. The birds were very quiet, probably due to the cool temperatures this morning.  I (Steve) decided to start calling at about 5:25, and one bird finally sounded off, way in the distance. ( Jay had been seeing & hearing birds here all week and having done his homework we knew they were in this area.)  At 5:40 AM, I called again with a little more aggressive yelping and three jakes, blew up very close to our location. They had been approaching us all this time, but in stealth mode! When they came into our view, we could see them as they saw the decoys, (They had lust in their eyes! ) They came in with a non-stop steady pace dead set for the decoys. Cheyenne made a very sweet, 22 yard shot,  to take this bird.  Jay coached Cheyenne through the final moments  and Steve talked the reluctant trio into range! Bird number four, for Cheyenne and this team is now history!
Congratulations Cheyenne, I am already counting the days until I can join you and your Dad again, for bird number 5!

This is truly an annual event, that I am so glad to have been a part of for "four" years running! One of my life's greatest hunting adventures.
THANK YOU - Cheyenne and Jay!

Not even one gobble off the roost this morning, I called in several hens and about 6:00 A.M. I heard the first Gobble. I called in the same (2) Toms, two times! The first time, the larger Tom stayed back to far to take the shot without hitting them both, they left and went away with a "live" hen. I thought all was lost.
I finally called and re-gained their attention away from the live hen about a half an hour later and had them both coming back again, I even pulled them across a brook! Finally the larger of the two birds presented himself for a clean head shot, just far enough away from the second strutting Tom.
I made it to work on time with 20 minutes to spare!

Nice going Dave! Very Nice Bird! Glad to see you back on the site this year!
Also..glad you made it to work without calling in a personal day!

Chris Calais - Norway, Maine
19 lb, 1 1/4 spur, 1 spur, 11 inch beard

Went out with my buddy Chris Calais on this morning. We roosted the bird that kicked my but several times last week. This bird never gobbles once he hits the ground and only gobbles once or twice in the tree. I have set up on him three times and never even got close. The last three days he has been strutting around 5:30 in the north corner of a corn field.
The plan was to set up there and just wait him out, no decoys, no calls.
Last week my self  (Chris Cobbett)  and my good friend Chris Calais headed out. At 5:15 ole tommy boy and 3 hens came out where I was set up last week (go figure). He struted for about 3 minutes and then took off out the far end of the field. Bummer!!!! I waited about 20 minutes and did not see another bird of any kind. So what the heck I hit the calls hard and make a boat load of noise. I called for about 5 minutes and never heard a sound from the forest. I looked at chris and said jokingly "don't all run in at once."
Before I finished looking back, about 13 birds (hen and jakes) can bursting from the tree line and sprinted over to us. They hung around for about 5 minutes and then moved to a small feild to our left. About then Tommy came back and printed to meet up with the group. I let him get over to them and settle down before I started calling. I cot real agressive and them tapered of to light purrs. The hens came back and dragged thomas with them. Once I had him in the camra full frame, I told chris to shoot. He piled up the bird at 47 yards. This was my toughest bird of the year. I was so happy we finally got him.

May 6th, 2006.
Here are a couple birds we took the first Saturday of A season. We had a great day. Roosted 4 toms friday night. They hit pay dirt at 5:20 and crossed 200 yards of corn field on the way to the strange sounds across the way. They strutted all the way in to 30 yards and became movie stars at 5:50 am. Deven made a great shot. The bird had a 11 inch rope.

We sat around for a couple hours having breakfast and trying to find another hunter. My friend Jerry was up from WI. working on his video skills and had not planned to hunt. When we found out he was born in 1974, we rushed down and he bought his tag at 10:37. We drove to several spots with no success. At 11:20 we sparked up a gobbler in an old clear cut. By 11:50 we were carrying out his first Maine tom.  It like never happens that smooth, but on this day we got
lucky.

This bird was a tough bird to call in, he hung up several times and Dan had more confidence in  my 3 1/2" Ulti-Mag than I would have, he took this bird at over 78 yards, A shot I might not have even attempted with a shotgun. Those 3 1/2" #5 Heavy Shot 12 ga. Remington loads really hold their pattern. This bird was simply no match for the range of this gun! Now I know why I have a gun of this caliber for turkey hunting, it certainly won't let you down when you need that type of range!

Someone called me and told me where a turkey was in a field, so I went there!  This is what I did. I got there at 11:15 when I got there, a tom and 3 hens were out there. I tried to call them up to me but they would not come. So I crawled along the woodline closer to them. I was about 80 yards and called and the hens came up to about 10 feet from me. The tom did not. After the hens went back down towards the tom, I crawled some more and got about 40 yards from the tom and waited for him to stay still and shot him with 20 minutes to spare.
But I got cheated. He only had one spur!
He weighed 18 lbs. 5 oz. - 7 7/8 beard
and the one spur on the right foot was 1 1/8
Well Dennis At least he was a DRY Bird!

This bird came off the roost (bumped by two hunters) at 4:45 AM! After over an hour of calling the two hunters tried to stalk these birds and bumped into us, when they saw us set up they yielded to us by stopping and not moving in the woods behind us for over 40 minutes, while I continued to work these birds with leaf scratching. (True Sportsman!!! Thank you guys!!)
With over two hours of soft purr's and scratching leaves, I finally got three jakes and two hens in shooting range for Jay, a long slow process!  Jay made a clean shot on this bird at about 35 yards. Congratulations Jay!

Chris Cobbett - Oxford Hills, Maine
Got the season kicked off doing a little turkey hunting in SC with my son Dylan. He was at my side when I took these two swing lows. What a fun time with the little guys. Took these birds in the afternoon, a first for me, coming from Maine. Felt almost like waiting for deer. When they hit the field I was set up on, a couple light calls and here they come. Lots of fun.  Both birds were about 19lb with 10 inch beards.

Chris Cobbett - Oxford Hills, Maine
This is my Maine tom. It took three days to get in this ole guys way, but it was worth it. I always say, I can lose every day, he can only lose once. 22.5 lb, 2-1 inch spurs, 10.5 inch beard.
Well even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then. I finally got my Maine turkey this morning. It was the same bird that I worked yesterday. However Yesterday he kicked my butt and circled around me and then off the meet up with his honey.
We put three groups of birds to bed last night, but this morning I could not help but go back after the big boy. He was gobbling for 20 minutes on the tree but then shut up when he hit pay dirt. I tried calling but got no answer. 15 minutes later I heard a hen off in the woods and started getting aggressive with her. 5 minutes later she came out to kick some hen butt and dragged ole Tommy with her. We got the whole thing on tape. The bird went 22.5 LB, 1 inch and 1.25 inch spurs with an 10.5 inch beard. I am looking forward to sleeping in
tomorrow.

Well, as long as I have turkey hunted I have always wanted to take my dad.Our family does not have a long history of hunters. And as a kid I was way more fired up about it that dad. But my Dad and grandfather always made time to get me out. As an adult I have tried to repay the favor. I have taken dad deer and bear hunting several times in the past few years. However he has never got a turkey permit (forgot to apply last year).

At any rate today was the first day we ever got to go. My friend Tony and I roosted this bird and thought it would be an easy bird to get as he would fly down from where he flew up. We went in at night and set up a pop up blind and thought it would be a fly down flop thing at 5:20.

Wrong again!!!! The bird flew the other way and stayed off at 150 yards till 6:00. The bird moved to our right and was headed away. I started calling really aggressive and pulled him away from the hen. Problem was he came right to us. From where he was it was our side. I had the camera set up the other way and dad set up to shoot the same direction as the camera. The bird was 10 feet in front of the blind on the wrong side. I said to hell with the camera and told dad to stand up, I would move his seat to shoot out the other way. As he stood up the bird began to move around to the other side. I called one more time to keep him distracted and sat dad back down. He got the gun up as the bird came into view and smoked him at a whopping 10 feet. Dad was super pumped. The best part was that the camera was running the whole time and got the bird coming around and was full frame when he shot. I was not even looking. I forgot it was on.

WOW! Sweet Story and to be with your Dad!
Congratulations to both of you!

Arron Falls- Chris Cobbett Oxford Hills, Maine
Jake 15 lb, 5 inch beard

After roosting a few birds, I called my friend Arron to see if he would be interested in trying for them. He was, we did and the rest is a photo. 5:30 two birds came into the field about 200 yard away and fluffed up. I did a couple light calls with the slate and they came a running. They got by the window I had open for Arron. So I had to get really loud and get them gobbling hard enough not to be distracted by me opening the other window in the blind. Boom flop. I really love this stuff, what a way to stay in the woods between deer seasons.

Congratulations! Rick!!!!

I took out long time best Friend Rick Seavey from Sanford ME this morning . This late season hunting can be real hard . Last night me and my son Tyler went out and roosted a huge Tom to play with in the AM as luck would have it Rick settled his sights on this monster and with the pull of the trigger he hit the dirt! The shot was at 45 yds too boot ! Turkey folded right there and never moved captured all on video " Great shot Rick"  Ricks bird came in at 22 lbs 9.5 inch beard and 7/8's spurs !

Jim Peck -Saco, Me and Ralph Pino - Gloucester, Mass.

Jim Peck knew the bird was in this area and we set up on a small point. When the bird sounded off near dawn he was a short distance away. Once the hunt got underway, Jim made a soft purr and slight yelp and the bird was tuned in and wanted the Mrs. he heard!
Because there was a huge tree between me and the bird, I never saw the bird, but when Ralph made the move to take the shot, I put my fingers in my ears and Ralph let his 10 Ga.rip.
I had no idea what he shot or if he hit it, but, with the smile on his face I assumed he got it.  The bird was a mature tom!
This is Ralph's first bird and I think we have another turkey addict on our hands.
Special thanks to Jim Peck of Saco for taking the time to offer a big hand to a new comer to the sport.
